A crew of professional shoplifters take aim at a cutthroat fashion mogul in an effort they deem ‘community service’.
Director Boots Riley (whose film Sorry To Bother You was an audience favourite in Studio 74) , brings a funhouse energy and a charismatic ensemble – led by foursome Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige and Poppy Liu, with Demi Moore, Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter and Don Cheadle in supporting roles.
This exuberant, absurdist, colourful capitalist critique follows Corvette, Mariah and Sade – Bay Area Robin Hoods. Gleefully ransacking the stores of amoral haute couture designer Christie Smith (played by Demi Moore). The trio build community with their “fast fashion philanthropy” among fellow boosters and appreciative customers alike. In furious TV tirades, Smith dubs them “the Velvet Gang” and “low-class urban bitches.” Corvette’s just flattered Christie knows they exist…
